Attack of the Killer Mushrooms  マタンゴ (Matango / 1959 -- English subtitles) Could anything be more scary? Mushroom people attack the survivors of the shipwreck on an uninhabited island. English subtitles.

A classic --- Rashomon (1950).  Akira Kurosawa's breakthrough drama stars Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo.  has English subtitles.

Another Akira Kurosawa classic: They Who Step on Tiger's Tail  [Tora no o wo fumu otokotachi] (1945. )  "A fugitive lord and his bodyguards and followers, all disguised as monks, traverse a forest)" ---  Internet Movie database

And yet another Akira Kurosawa classic: Sugata Sanshiro (1943). Sanshiro, a strong stubborn youth, comes to the city to apprentice at a jujitsu school.  This is in Japanese, but English subtitles can be downloaded from the Internet Archive.

A masterpiece of Japanese Sci Fi, Warning from Space, concerns a comet headed for earth and extraterrestrials. In English (even the folks from space speak English).

An award winning documentary on the prolific Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.

Maybe a little goofy, probably a little offensive, this propaganda film,  My Japan, produced by the Treasury Department during World War II is actually quite interesting.
